SocRob is a long-term research project, encompassing a broad range of efforts towards teams of cooperative robots to perform tasks, with particular focus on the participation in scientific competitions.
The “SocRob” acronym has two different meanings: Soccer Robots and Society of Robots.
We started participating in RoboCup Soccer competitions (Middle Size League) in 1998 as SocRob. We got to participate in both 4-Legged League and Simulation League as well. Later on we added a RoboCup Rescue team, and since 2014 we have been engaging with RoboCup@Home, as well as RoCKIn@Home and later ERL Service and Consumer Service Robots.
We are at the moment interested in some particular research topics (benchmarking, task planning and plan representation, semantic mapping, cooperative perception, mobile manipulation).
Robotics Lab UC3 – Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain)
Our team intends to participate in this tournament, with this background of a multidisciplinary research group, focusing all efforts towards the proposed final applications.
We are Gentlebots, a team of researchers in Robotics from Rey Juan Carlos University and University of León that participates in the RoboCup@home.
We participate in robot Competitions since 2005 in different categories (4-legged, SPL and RoboCup@Home) under different team names (TeamChaos, SPITeam, LeonBots, Outsiders, …) in several competitions (RoboCup, European Robotics League, RoCKIn, German Open, Dutch Open, Latin American Open, Rome Cup, …)
We are currently planning to participate in Social Standard Platform League using the Pepper Robot.
Our team is focused on software development that allows robots to exhibit intelligent behaviors. For this reason, the majority of the participation in competitions have been in leagues whose robot is standard for all the participants of the league, where the focus is in the programming of the algorithms. However, Watermelon Project began with the development of a wooden robot called MYRABot. In the last edition of RoboCup we participated with RB-1, whose manufacture was carried out by Robotnik. Since last year, with the acquisition of two Pepper robots, we want to return to the standard leagues of RoboCup, this time within RoboCup@Home.
Our team is made up of a group of students interested in aerospace projects, focusing on UAVs. Our backgrounds are in aerospace engineering, 3D printing and computer science, and alongside our studies we work on a mixture of research, commercial, STEM outreach and personal projects.
eNTiTy – Everbots – NTT Inc. (Spain)
The main focus of our team is to develop social robotics application for our clients. Taking into account the availability of commercial robots, the type of robots we are using are mainly mobile robots which drive us to exploit robotics skills such as, navigation, local perception, and manipulation. We have experience working with robots such as Aldebaran’s Pepper and Tiago. In addition, we are focusing on the development of a cloud infrastructure specifically tailored to social robotics applications.
We strongly believe that the robots should not handle all the computation needs for such complex and challenging tasks/episodes and one of the solutions we are working on is the combination of a cloud infrastructure along with “edge computing”. During our participation in the ERL competition that took place in the IROS2018 conference in Madrid, where our approach was only cloud-oriented, we were challenged with the network limitation that this approach entitles.
Therefore, our aim we want to achieve is twofold. One is to apply our robotics assets to scenarios where real untrained users are interacting with the robot, and second, we want to validate that an approach that combines cloud and edge computing in scenarios that take place in such dynamic environment is worth researching.
We are a newly established AI group, studying long-term decision making and adaptation, mostly through reinforcement learning, and often applied to robotics.
We have both industrial and domestic robots and compete in RoboCup@Work and RoboCup@Home competitions. By participating in SciRoc we want to test the generality of our approaches in navigation, perception, manipulation, task planning etc., since the tasks are different from those in RoboCup.
HEARTS – Bristol Robotics Laboratory (UK)
The HEARTS (Healthcare Engineering and Assistive Robotics Technology and Services) team has been formed to provide an opportunity for students to get hands-on experience of developing assistive robots that are robust and reliable to assist people in a range of situations, primarily focusing on supporting a growing older population to continue to live independently at home. The HEARTS team is based in the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) which is a collaboration between two universities, the University of the West of England (UWE) and the University of Bristol, both situated in Bristol, UK.
The HEARTS team comprises members from many different backgrounds, united by a common vision and aspirations for the positive roles that assistive robots will play in the near future. Team members HEARTS team members are from a diverse range of backgrounds, some technical (software, electronics, mechatronics, etc.) and some non-technical (psychology, occupational therapy, etc.).
As a technology transfer center, the CATIE organization has a broad set of skills and strong ties with engineer schools, laboratories and high tech startups. CATIE robotics was created in early 2018, the team aims to explore service robotics from an application-driven perspective and benefits from the multidisciplinary environment it lives in.
The ROS based robot TIAGo from PAL Robotics was chosen as the main development platform and was received in August 2018. Currently, the main challenge is to integrate previous developments to obtain robust and autonomous behaviors on the robot.
Promising results have been achieved in the fields of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) and safe navigation. A working pipeline of speech to text, Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and speech synthesis has been successfully tested. State of the art neural networks architectures have been used for face recognition and body pose estimation, they will be integrated on the robot soon.
TeamBathDrones research is the University of Bath competitive autonomous aircraft team. The team is formed of a mixture of lecturers, PhD and undergraduate students from the engineering faculty.
Research undertaken by the mechanical engineering department focuses around collision avoidance by in-flight risk minimisation. Through entering the ERL we aim to further our research goals by demonstrating its application to these challenging scenarios.
